George Walton, owner of Meadow Garden House, built in 1792

George Walton 1749/50 - 1804

Walton served Georgia in many roles - elected six times Congressional Representative; twice as Governor; once as United States Senator; four times as Judge of the Superior Court; and once as Chief Justice of the State.

In 1792 George Walton, his wife, Dorothy, and their two sons, Thomas and George Jr., moved to a house now known as Meadow Garden. The name of the house comes from the fact that Walton frequently referred to himself as, "George Walton of Meadow Garden." It was located on an open meadow outside of town and the land was originally 100 acres but Walton expanded it to 121 acres.

The original structure of Meadow Garden was built with four rooms (two on each floor). A ladder was used to ascend to the second floor and today you can still see where the opening for the ladder was on the second floor. Later another house of four rooms was added and was raised to create two basement rooms. Adding this second house caused two roof lines as the house was set on two levels. This addition is most obvious on the front porch, where there are two sets of steps and two front doors.

The historic home, Meadow Garden opened to the public in November 1901.
